HITCHES AND VOICES : BEYOND THE DISABILITY; CONFRONTING SGBV

In March 2026, Hitches and Voices took a closer look at the growing conversations around Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), particularly as it concerns persons with disabilities. Through a four-part series featuring Ronke Ojiekhere, The Executive Director of SOTHAWACA, Ann Ojugo, Chairperson of JONAPWD, Dr Faith Edewor,  The Manager of VIVIAN SARC and Victoria Omo-Ero, Director of STEYP. The program explored not only the realities of violence and abuse but also the systems, structures, and responsibilities involved in protecting vulnerable individuals in society.

A key theme that ran through the series was the fact that persons with disabilities are often excluded from SGBV conversations, despite being among the most vulnerable groups. Across the episodes, discussions highlighted how stigma, dependence on caregivers, communication barriers, limited accessibility, and fear of not being believed can make it difficult for survivors to speak up or seek help.

The series also examined the Edo State Disability Law and its role in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. While the law provides protection against discrimination, harmful treatment, and violence, the discussions emphasized that laws alone are not enough without proper implementation, public awareness, and functional support systems.

Another important focus was on referral pathways and survivor support systems. Conversations explored access to healthcare, psychosocial support, legal aid, and other essential services, while also identifying existing gaps, especially for persons with disabilities.

As the series progressed, the conversation shifted from awareness to accountability and action. It examined the roles of government institutions, organizations, healthcare providers, the media, communities, and individuals in building safer and more inclusive systems. The need for collaboration and intentional inclusion in policies and public discourse was consistently emphasized.

Ultimately, the March edition of Hitches and Voices served as more than a discussion platform. It became a space for education, reflection, and advocacy—encouraging a deeper understanding of SGBV and reinforcing the urgent need to ensure that persons with disabilities are not excluded from protection, support, and justice.
