On Friday, April 18, 2025, another edition of Hitches and Voices aired on ITV/Radio 92.3 FM (GOTV channel 140, Startime channel 130). Continuing our mission of amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities (PWD) in Nigeria, this episode was supported by Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and funded by FORD Foundation.
This week’s conversation, titled “Disability: Myths, Realities, and Stories,” featured Mr. Matthew Maxwell a physically challenged, who shared deeply personal insights into the daily struggles and societal perceptions faced by people with disabilities.
Mr. Maxwell spoke candidly about the challenges of constantly being met with pity. He explained that while many people mean well, pity often reinforces harmful stereotypes that portray PWD as helpless. Instead, he called for empathy, not pity, stressing that empathy recognizes the humanity, dignity, and capabilities of persons with disabilities.
“Having a physical disability doesn’t mean I am incapable,” Mr. Maxwell said. “It simply means I may do things differently, but I can still achieve just as much.”
The discussion shed light on one of the most pressing issues facing PWD in Nigeria today — the persistence of myths and misconceptions that limit opportunities and reinforce exclusion. Hitches and Voices continues to serve as a platform where such narratives are challenged, ensuring that society sees disability not as a limitation, but as part of human diversity.
This episode was not just a conversation; it was a call to re-examine our perceptions and commit to building a more inclusive society where PWD are recognized for their strengths, not their struggles.
